 | Coal mine model, Arts and Industries Building, 1920s
Smithsonian curators planning a mining exhibit in 1914 aimed "to prepare a model reproduction of each important type of mineral industry operating in the field, tracing conditions and processes from natural occurrence to finished products." This exhibit, on display for thirty years, was dismantled in the 1940s because the processes it showed were "technologically obsolete."
