Bed warmer, 1700s
This is just one of more than two thousand objects donated to the Smithsonian in 1949 by Arthur and Edna Greenwood, collectors of antique household items and folk art of rural New England. Curators used many of these artifacts to tell a new story of the American past, one that emphasized ordinary people and everyday life instead of famous individuals and founding families.
