Appalachian dulcimer, 1965
As part of the Smithsonian's growing interest in American folklife, Scott Odell, museum musicologist, traveled to the mountains of southwestern Virginia and North Carolina to document Appalachian musical traditions. He recorded performances of folk songs and also collected several instruments, including this dulcimer, made for the Smithsonian in 1965 by Jethro Amburgey of Hindman, Kentucky.
