| ||Arabic coffee maker, about 1920
This silver-and-brass coffee maker was bought and used by an Arab immigrant family in the early twentieth century. Coffee sets, symbols of hospitality, were a staple of the Arab American household, providing a link to immigrants' native identity. During the 1980s the historian Alixa Naff donated to the Smithsonian hundreds of artifacts and documents relating to Arab American life between 1880 and 1940.
