U.S. Olympic hockey team jersey, 1980
Coming at the height of Cold War tensions between the two superpowers, a hockey match at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York, became a cause for national celebration. The underdog American team defeated the Soviet Union in the semifinal game and went on to win the gold medal. In 1984, through the efforts of Sports Illustrated magazine, team members donated jerseys and other memorabilia from the "miracle on ice" to the Smithsonian.
