 | Mourning picture, about 1815
Susan Winn, a student at Linden Hall Seminary in Lititz, Pennsylvania, embroidered this memorial to her sister, Caroline, who died in 1806. The scene depicts Susan and other members of her family grieving at the urn, a symbol of the deceased. In 1938 the Smithsonian acquired a large collection of antiquarian items, including this picture, from the estate of Albert Adsit Clemons, a Washington, D.C., collector.
