Patent model of Margaret Knight's machine for making paper bags, 1879

Although Knight is credited with nearly ninety inventions and twenty-two patents, her patent models were not among those collected by the Smithsonian in the early 1900s. But in 1979, when curators were seeking objects related to women inventors, Knight's model was a prize find.
